DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENTS’ INTEREST IN READING: UPDATING THE EXPERIENCE OF VASIL SUHOMLYNSKYI’S EXPERIENCE

Abstract. The article deals with the problem of students' interest in reading. Attention is drawn to the reasons for the decline of students' interest in reading, which are primarily related to the development of information and communication technologies. Emphasis is made on the concepts of “reading” and “reading competence”, updated tasks for the development of reading competence of elementary school students in accordance with the State standard of primary education.The results of the monitoring study of the quality of elementary education  “State of formation of reading and mathematical competences of graduates of elementary schools in secondary education” by the Ukrainian Center for Assessment of Quality of Education (2018) are presented.It has been found that reading contributes to the formation of the qualities of a developed and socially valuable person. The advantages of the reading personality are distinguished.The experience of Pavlysh school, headed  by V. Sukhomlynskyi, concerning the formation of students’ interest in reading has been updated. The following forms of work to develop students’ interest in reading are distinguished, in particular: language literary classes, native word holiday of native language, holiday of book, competitions of readers, promotion of books for self-education and self-development, formation of personal libraries can be used in the context of solving the contemporary problem of education, related to the formation of students’ reading competence in the context of the New Ukrainian School Concept.The ideas and experience of V. Sukhomlynskyi’s work on developing students’ interest in reading allowed us to distinguish the following functions: informational, communicative, educational, cognitive, regulatory, relaxation, aesthetic.
