Abstract

Various types of media resources play a dominant role in the lives of the younger generation. Despite of the positive role and opportunities offered by information technologies, their negative impact is increasing every day. These facts determine the relevance of the formation and development of children’s media literacy. Therefore, the article reviews the main issues of media literacy formation and practice in the United States. The author provides massive public information, using information about his history and performing media education and US media charts, by foreign and Ukrainian authors. The terms «media», «media education» and «media literacy» are defined. The author examines the impact of media messages: such as obesity, bullying and aggression, low self-esteem, depression, negative body image, risky sexual behavior, drug and alcohol abuse, tobacco use, all types of cyberbullying. The author covers school media education in the United States, which is officially integrated into the curriculum of all fifty states in the discipline. A detailed analysis of methods, techniques, ways and means in the educational process for the development of media literacy is shown. The author describes the Five Key Questions and Principles technology for analyzing media messages. The article discusses key concepts of media literacy that allow students to have a deeper and more critical understanding of media messages. These offers are presented for media practitioners, school curricula of grades 1-12, those, professors, consultants, artists, media workers. The method of news literacy and current events and its use in various subjects and courses is covered.
