In the article it is analyzed the essence of didactic adaptation of students to the conditions of study in higher education institutions. The  essence of pedagogical assistance to didactic adaptation is to help students to adapt to the conditions of the didactic environment and, at the same time, to create favorable conditions for such adaptation. The difficulties of didactic adaptation faced by future educators at the initial stage of studying at a high school are highlighted. The possibilities of the “Introduction to the specialty” course on the pedagogical assistance to the didactic adaptation of first year students - future teachers of pre-school establishments are considered. It makes it possible to improve the orientation of students in the didactic situation of the institution of higher education, to familiarize with the values of education and future professional activities, to increase motivation in relation to training and vocational training. Adaptation possibilities of this course can be greatly enhanced by the use of adequate methodological tools and orientation on subject-subject interaction with students, which depends on the level of teacher's teaching skills, in particular - on his didactic competence.
