The object and subject should be defined in every scientific work, they are required elements of research. Their absence may indicate that the researcher is not fully aware of what he is researching, and his chosen methods and tools may be inadequate. Failure to clearly identify the object and subject of research deprives the work of a scientific nature. The article reveals the peculiarities of interpretations of the concepts "object" and "subject" of pedagogical research on the basis of comparing their characteristics in the scientific discourses of Ukraine and Poland, and provides recommendations for improving the methodological support of qualification works. It is shown that in the tradition of the Polish methodological school the concept of "subject" of research («przedmiot badań») is analogous to the two concepts of "object" and "subject", which are commonly defined in domestic scientific works. The choice and formulation of the object and subject of research is directly part of the research activity, which is creative in nature and is not a trivial matter. The subject is a hierarchical system of object substitutions by signs included in certain systems of operation, in which these substitution systems really exist as objects of a special kind. The article answers a number of questions about the methods of determining the subject of research, the relationship between the concepts of object and subject with the research problem, the factors influencing the choice and definition of the object and subject of research. The systematization of the causes of shortcomings in determining the methodological characteristics of pedagogical research related to: terminological misunderstandings, the idea of the subject as part of the object; incorrect definition of object and subject; substitution of the subject by other categories – the purpose or objectives of the study; the gap between the object and the subject of research; replacing the object with an object and vice versa; inconsistency and mixing of methodological characteristics.
