HISTORICAL AND PEDAGOGICAL ANALYSIS OF FAMILY EDUCATION IN THE CONTEXT OF ATTITUDES TRANSFORMATION TOWARDS CHILDREN AND CHILDHOOD

Abstract. The article presents the history and the pedagogical analysis of family upbringing in the context of the transformation of attitudes towards children and childhood. It has been defined that a family is an environment of a child’s comprehensive development, and parents are responsible not only for the upbringing, development, and education of children, for saving their lives, strengthening health and a conscious attitude to a healthy lifestyle, but also forming a sense of human dignity as well. Historical aspects of the family upbringing have been considered in the article. Taking into account that the content, the goals and the methods of education are determined by historical and cultural features, an attempt is made to reveal the features of the transformation of attitudes towards children in different historical epochs: from infanticide and recognition of independence and self-worth of childhood. It has been highlighted how the educational influence of the adult world, fitting into certain social, cultural and historical contexts, forms its pedagogical paradigm of childhood, i.e. a set of attitudes at society at a certain historical stage, values of childhood in general, education, and upbringing of children.

The views of philosophers, public figures, and teachers on the upbringing of children in the family (Aristotle, Cicero, Seneca, Erasmus of Rotterdam, J.-J. Rousseau, J.-G. Pestalozzi, G. Skovoroda, F. Froebel, O. Dukhnovych, K. Ushynskіi, B. Grinchenko, N. Lubenets, S. Rusova, A. Makarenko, Iu. Arkin, V. Sukhomlynskii) have been analyzed. Based on the analysis of scientists’ views on the problem of family education, own understanding of the concept has been formulated. In our study, we consider family upbringing as a specially organized interpersonal relationship between parents and children based on the principles of humanism.
