FEATURES OF TEACHING SPEAKING ENGLISH IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS

The article describes effective forms and methods of teaching students to speak English in classes at higher education institutions. The main reasons for the teacher's involvement of students in the process of speaking in foreign language classes are given, and a brief description of dialogic and monologic speech is given. The authors highlight and analyze a number of problems in teaching foreign oral speech and propose the ways to solve them. The effectiveness of students’ training at higher education institutions depends on their motivation and the teacher, therefore it is important to choose the most optimal methods and forms of teaching. The goal of the English language teacher is the formation of students’ communication abilities and skills. The development of communicative competence is the basis for learning foreign languages. Students must understand and independently create expressions in a foreign language depending on a certain situation in the process of communication. It was found out that the difficulties of speaking a foreign language significantly affect the development of students’ communicative competence. The essence of an effective task for the development of speaking is determined and a series of exercises is proposed that contribute to the development of oral speech skills in students and the formation of their communicative competence, solving the discussed problems. The examples of the effective types of tasks are given, which are close to real communicative actions and are aimed at the development and improvement of oral communication skills and abilities, namely: information-gap activities, picture story, picture description, storytelling, story completion, discussion, brainstorming, role play, interview and report. It was concluded that success of communication in English depends on effective speaking tasks, forms of dialogic and monologic speech, and the possibility to involve each student in the process of speaking in foreign language classes.
