The article addresses the pertinent issue of implementing student autonomy in online learning. The authors delve into the theoretical framework of fostering student autonomy within online foreign language classes in higher education institutions, while also identifying both the opportunities and obstacles in maximizing the benefits of online learning to promote autonomy. Additionally, the article distinguishes between distance and online learning, shedding light on the evolution of pedagogical support specifically for online learning in Ukraine. The authors update the principles and methodological steps to ensure and stimulate the development of autonomy in online learning. The paper confirms that student autonomy is a dynamic and motivating factor that positively affects foreign language learning, and the multimedia nature of online learning creates more opportunities for students to interact with educational content independently and simultaneously provides significant potential for mutual knowledge generation. The findings of the study highlight the crucial role of teacher training. The lack of digital literacy among teachers and higher education students often hinders the implementation of student autonomy in online learning. Additionally, the absence of professional guidance for students struggling to organize their academic work independently poses a significant constraint. The paper concludes that the relationship between online education and student autonomy is a dynamic and interdependent process. The introduction of autonomy in online learning, including foreign language learning, presents both opportunities and challenges for its promotion. Educators must carefully balance the development of students' autonomy skills with providing the necessary support.
