The article deals with the problem of forming in the students of the art-pedagogical faculty of research competence in the process of professional training. The essence of the research competence of a teacher is justified, its components are highlighted, their features and content are disclosed. The reflexive component of research competence is highlighted and its significance in the research activities of students of art and pedagogical specialties has been determined. Intellectual and personal reflection of research competence is a motivational factor for continuous self-development and professional selfimprovement. They provide future teachers with the ability to continuously improve the educational process on the basis of continuous self-education and self-improvement throughout all professional activities. Based on the theoretical analysis, promising ways of forming research competence at different levels of higher education and its components are outlined
