MOTIVATION OF STUDENTS TO LEARN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE IN HIGHER EDUCATION INSTITUTIONS

Abstract

The article deals with the role of student motivation in learning a foreign language. Motivation is a multifaceted concept and is defined as the most important element in stimulating learning processes and verbal communication. It is stated that motivation stimulates active and purposeful activity and determines the sequence and choice of means and methods to achieve the goal. The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the motivation of students to study foreign languages in higher educational establishments. The authors analyze the specifics of student motivation and present methods to motivate students of higher education establishments to learn a foreign language. The peculiarities of aspects of the motivational process in higher education are revealed. Types of motivation, modern conceptual approaches to the mechanism of motivation as one of the components of the mechanism of interest in achieving maximum results are characterized. The regularities of the variety of internal motivation of students to study a foreign language have been studied and analyzed. The main and general motives of students are identified, their attitude to the chosen specialty is determined, and the dynamics of changes in motivation from the first to the fourth year of study are shown. Pedagogical conditions aimed at increasing the level of active motivation of students to learn a foreign language are proposed, namely: implementation of a positive attitude, students' awareness of the purpose of their activities in the process of learning a foreign language; availability of opportunities for independence. The authors suggest that teachers actively communicate with unmotivated students. It is also emphasized that in the process of motivating students, such factors as the level of interest of students, the intensity of their feelings, their experience of success and the importance of motivation for collective achievements should be taken into account.
