THE SPECIFICS OF ETHNIC IDENTITY OF PERSPECTIVE EDUCATORS AND SPEECH THERAPISTS

The content of the terms “ethnicity”, “ethnic consciousness”, “identity”, “ethnic identity”, “ethnic tolerance” have been explained. The types of ethnic identity have been revealed: ethno-nihilism, ethnic indifference, positive ethnic identity, ethno-egoism, ethno-isolationism, ethno-fanaticism. Concepts for developing students’ awareness of their own ethnicity are considered. Psychological, anthropological and sociological aspects of the problem of national identity formation and ethnic tolerance have been analyzed. It was shown that ethnic tolerance is a specific feature of the national character, the spirit of nations and an integral part of the structure of mentality.

The study revealed normal levels of ethnic identity and tolerance among students as a manifestation of the cognitive-emotional process. Respondents from the experimental sample show typical behavior patterns for their ethnic group, a desire to preserve the language and customs of their nation. Most students of pedagogical specialties have a positive ethnic identity as a combination of a positive attitude toward their own nation and a positive attitude toward other nations.

The results of statistical data processing using the Student’s t-test showed that there are no gender differences (α=0.05) in indicators of such scales of the «Ethnic Identity» methodology as “Feeling of belonging to one’s ethnic group”, “Meaning of ethnicity”. There are gender differences (α=0.05) in such indicators of the scale of the “Ethnic identity” methodology as “Assessment of majority-minority relations”.
